Reminder Regarding Use Of PTUs and Holiday Commitments

As we approach the New Year holiday, we would like to address the call-ins that occurred over Christmas. It has come to our attention that there were numerous call-ins during this time. The large number of call ins reported to us by management does give cause for concern and we understand that it can be related to the high prevalence of flu and respiratory illnesses in the community which add to the usual day to day DBL, FMLA and PFL absence leaves.

We want to remind all members of the new contract language regarding call-ins during holidays. If you called in over the Christmas holiday, it is essential to adhere to the following contract provision:

According to the contract language: Members who called in over the Christmas holiday must provide documentation for the exclusions outlined in the CBA that would justify their absence and the need to be placed on an additional holiday. To avoid being placed on an additional holiday, please contact your manager and provide documentation as outlined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The contract language is as follows: If an employee calls in on their scheduled holiday, the employee will not have met their holiday commitment and may be scheduled for that holiday the following year. In addition, an employee who calls in PTU or reports off on a holiday listed in this agreement will be required to make up such days on another holiday within the next 12 months, unless the absence is due to the employee's extended illness (three [3] or more days), hospitalization, bereavement leave, LOA, Workers' Compensation, DBL, continuous PFL or continuous FMLA. Failure to make up the holiday as scheduled will result in the employee needing to make up both the original holiday and the make-up day

If an employee does not meet their holiday commitment or make-up holiday more than one (1) time in a 13-month period, they will receive progressive discipline beginning with a verbal warning unless an absence is due to the employee's extended illness (three [3] or more days), hospitalization, bereavement leave, LOA, Workers' Compensation, DBL, continuous PFL, or continuous FMLA.

Please also make note that the PTO year has been reset as of Sunday December 28th and any time used will go towards the new 2026 PTO calendar, however the Time & Attendance "PTU Year" does not reset until June 1, 2026 and occurrences will continue to accrue until then. If you have additional questions or concerns, please reach out to a steward, your AVP, or an officer by calling the office or by emailing with your contact information.
