Buffalo General Shift Differential and Dues Update
Shift Differential
There are ongoing discrepancies regarding shift differential pay at the Buffalo General Medical Center and the GVI campus. We are not aware of these same issues occurring at other Kaleida sites. Currently, the Kronos system categorizes employees as day, mid, or night shift. We have identified that when day or mid-shift employees pick up night shifts, they are not automatically receiving the full night differential for the hours worked between 7:00 PM and 7:00 AM. To ensure you are compensated correctly, we recommend documenting this request in the "Exception Log" to create a formal record and ensure management makes the necessary manual adjustment. If your manager or timekeeper refuses to process this adjustment, or if you have requested a correction and have not received a timely payroll adjustment, please contact the union office immediately for further assistance.
We are committed to ensuring all members are paid accurately for the work they perform. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you encounter further issues with this process.
Union Dues
The local union has received concerns regarding inconsistencies in the amount of union dues being deducted each pay period. To clarify, the CWA dues structure is based on a fixed percentage of 1.41% of base pay (i.e. hourly rate x hours worked, up to full-time x 1.41%).
Please note the following factors that may cause your dues amount to fluctuate:
- Hours Worked: Dues are calculated based on your actual hours worked. If your hours vary from week to week (e.g., a 36-hour employee working 37.5 hours), your dues deduction will adjust accordingly.
- Pay Increases: As dues are a percentage of your base pay, any step increase or contractual raise will result in a corresponding change to the dollar amount of your dues.
- Exclusions: Dues are not deducted from bonus pay or overtime earnings.
- Cap: Dues are capped at a maximum of 37.5 hours per week.
We have investigated these concerns by reviewing specific cases with the payroll department. Payroll has verified that their systems are correctly coded to stop dues deductions once the 37.5-hour threshold is reached, confirming that the current deductions are consistent with our established dues structure.
